In recent times, the importance of owning a website can not be overstated. According to Web host rating, there were about 255 million websites on the internet as of December 2010. Now in 2020, there are over 1.74 billion websites, an increase of over 700%!
Wikipedia defines a website as a collection of web pages and related content that is identified by a common domain name and published on at least one web server. In simple terms, a destination on the internet with a URL.
Do I need a website?
The question “do I need a website” has been asked countless times in recent years. With the exponential rate at which the number of websites on the internet has increased, a lot of businesses and individuals still find it quite unsafe to have their information on a website.
Creating a website for your business, institution, company, or for yourself as an individual has a lot of benefits. Some of these benefits include:
1. Wider reach: According to Statista.com, the internet has over 4.57 billion users as of April 2020. That’s about 59% of the total world population, making it the largest market place on the planet! And with a whopping 2.1 billion of the 4.57billion being Asians, owning a website in Asia has never been more important!
When you own a website, you would be making your goods and service available to literally billions of people from all over the world and not just limiting yourself to the boundary of your immediate environment.
2.Round the clock availability: When you own a website, your business would always be on the map. Demand for your goods and service would always be occurring without the need for an on-site salesperson, all day, every day.
3.Cost-effective: Owning a website greatly eliminates a lot of costs incurred by owning physical office space. Amazon.com, one of the biggest companies in the world according to Statista.com, started as a website, with no physical warehouse or office space!
These 3 benefits are just a few of a whole range of benefits of owning a website.
Creating a website
After most individuals and businesses answer the “do I need a website?” question, the biggest challenge is actually creating the website. The process of creating a website can be quite tedious.
In times past, creating a website was a task simply meant for Developers with the required programming skills to make a website. Apart from the amount of time it would take to actually contact a quality website developer and to actually create the website, the cost of creating a website was also another hindrance.
The developer would collect their payment for creating the website, and future payments would continue to accrue as “maintenance fees”. Add the constant price of hosting the website and acquiring a domain, and the price goes up even more.
As the demand for ease and convenience required to create a website increased, it brought the advent of Website builders.
What is a Website builder
Website builders are tools that typically allow the construction of websites without manual code editing. Simply put, a website builder allows an individual or business to create a fully functional website with little or no technical computer skills! The advent of website builders greatly increased the ease of making a website.
It virtually eliminated the cost of hiring a website developer, greatly reduced the time required to create a website, and also reduced the total cost required to maintain the website, leading to a massive boom in the number of websites on the internet.
Currently, in 2020, there are tons of website builders available online and offline with WordPress and Wix.com being one of the most popular websites builders around.
Take the site Easywebsitetw.com, they have a lot of the same information in Chinese. If they are able to make it happen in this language, you can make it happen in any language.
Wix.com was founded in 2006, and in a space of 14 years, it has grown to be one of the most popular and arguably the most convenient website builder on the planet. In 2020, Website setup, PcMag, and Site builder report all ranked Wix.com as the best website builder around.
But what makes Wix.com so good?
Wix.com offers over 500 different templates that you can base your website on, loads of photo filters and animated texts and thousands of drag and drop tools to give your website an even more professional feel, all without not writing a single line of code. And to top all off, it is “free”! For most parts.
They even have a ton of different languages!! Even their Chinese settings has lots of options.
Creating a website on Wix.com
Even though Wix.com promises a lot of ease and convenience when creating your website, it could get quite overwhelming at times knowing how to go about creating your website, and with the lack of Chat support, knowing the right steps could be somewhat difficult.
Here is a quick guide on how to go about creating your website,
1.Understand your brand
The first and perhaps the most important step is to understand your brand needs. Take your time to list out what you expect to see on your website. Itemize your available resources—your brand logo, brand slogan, and brand colours. If you do not have these, it’s best to get them first before heading on to build your website. Brand logo, slogan, and design give your business a personal identity of its own, that not only makes it unique but easily identifiable to your consumers.
Also, take the time to visit the rival company’s websites. Make use of search engines to understand what converts in your niche, and note it down for inclusion in your website.
2.Signup and answer the questions
When you fully understand your brand requirements, head on to Wix.com and Signup. The only 2 things you require to create a Wix.com account are simply your Email and a password.
Upon creation, you will be asked a series of questions like “Who are you creating a site for?” “What type of site are you building?, and “What is your level of expertise in creating a website?” After answering these questions, it will take you to the next page.
3.Select the preferred method of creation
On completing the questions, you would be directed to the next page, where you would observe 2 distinct routes to take when creating your website:
i. You could make use of the WixADI – All you need to do is answer a few questions, and fill in a page that requires your basic info, and the WixADI automatically creates your website! YES! It is that simple. Of course, there could be some final touch-ups, but select a domain name, and a server host and you have a live website!
ii. You could make use of the Wix editor – The Wix editor is a longer route. You are brought directly to the Wix editor homepage, and you go through the process of selecting your preferred colours and themes manually.
Both ways are usable, but for ease of use, we’ll be going through the WixADI.
4. Follow the WixADI
After clicking on the “Start now” button on the Wix ADI, you will be directed to the next page where a series of questions would be asked:
● What type of site do you want to create?
● What do you need on your new website?
● What is the name of your business, company, blog, or website?
● Do you want to import texts?
● Review and edit your info.
● Pick a theme you like.
● Pick your favourite homepage design.
These are the order in which the questions would be asked. You may either choose to answer them or skip them. But whatever you answer, you can still change the overall design anytime before publishing your website.
5. Make final touches in the Wix editor
On completion of the aforementioned questions, the WixADI will take a couple of minutes to compile your answers and create your website. Upon completion, you would be brought to the homepage of your website in the Wix editor for you to make final touches. A few things to take note of are:
i. Each section can be fully customized to your heart’s content by clicking on the edit button at the top left corner.
Ii. The available images are just templates that should be fully edited or replaced.
iii. Optimize your website to make it look good on phones. Wix.com automatically allows you to do this by providing a smartphone icon at the top left corner of the editor itself. You could simply click this and make final adjustments
6.Link a domain and publish
Depending on the kind of website you want, Wix.com offers various possibilities with the domain name. You could choose to use Wix.com’s readily available domain that would end up looking like “yourusername.wixsite.com/mysite”. “My site” part of the domain is customizable. But if you want a personalized domain, you could upgrade from Wix.com’s free plan to one of the paid plans and simply head to Domain.com to buy a personal customized domain.
Country limitations of Wix.com
Wix.com is truly easy and simple to use, but due to some governmental laws, it is not available in Iran, NorthKorea, Syria, Cuba, and the region of Crimea located in Ukraine.
Besides these places, it is available everywhere else.
